How do I identify the “Sys Ref” for my Jupiter Control System?

Every system enclosure will have a label applied like this example:

zetechtics system

The Sys Ref allows us to quickly find the control system you have and all documentation related to it.
It can also be found on the labels applied to the Laptop, Dongle, USB flash drive, FAT document and transit case if these are the ones supplied with the control system.

What is the latest version of the Jupiter Software and can I update it?

All new systems are supplied with Jupiter v7.60, which will operate on Windows 7 and above.
For most cases, there is no benefit to updating from the version supplied when the system was built.
Therefore, we do not make the latest version available to download. If you wish to enquire about an update please contact Zetechtics >>> 24 Hour Technical Support with the following details:

  1. System Reference
  2. Current Jupiter Software
  3. Copy of the .JUS setup file in use
  4. Windows Version
  5. Screen Resolution
  6. Screenshot of the Subsea Software version found in Setup Pages > Main Setup > Datalink Options when the system is powered and communicating.
I’m having trouble communicating with my Jupiter Subsea Control System - what do you recommend that I do?

Check the datalink configuration against the Quick Start Guide or Jupiter Basic Fault-Finding Guide.

Test the system using the Deck Test Cable to eliminate any external factors and help direct where fault finding efforts should be. Consider these 3 elements in this order:

  • Connections – Check every part of the physical connections from the PC USB-RS232 adaptor down to the cable connecting to the control system.
  • Subsea Settings – Ensure this matches the wiring configuration. Most common is RS485 Half-Duplex when operating over copper, which will require a surface line driver.
When operating over fibre, RS232 3-wire is the most common protocol. Ensure any part of the datalink that is on copper is less than 50m when operating in RS232.
  • Surface Settings – Check Baud rate and Update rate is not too high for the physical datalink. Check Duplex mode is correct for the selected protocol.
The license dongle for my Jupiter Subsea Control System is missing or faulty - will the system still operate?

If a dongle is lost or fails and the software version is 5.42 or later, it will continue to operate for one month. We recommend you obtain a new dongle from Zetechtics as soon as possible.

Temporary licenses up to 90-days can be issued. Provide the System Reference for the Control System and the System Identifier from the PC running the Jupiter Software (use Apply for License Key option). How to find the System Identifier.

For earlier versions of software use the password provided or contact Zetechtics >>> 24 Hour Technical Support.

Can I operate the Jupiter Software without a dongle?

Yes, as above, a temporary license can be produced if communication to a control system is required.
If communication is not required, the “Use Unlicensed (No datalink)” option can be used. This will allow loading of any setup file to review or make changes to, without allowing communication to a control system.

Can I use the dongle from a different system?

As the dongle determines how many inputs/outputs are made available, as well as software options such as the Datalogger and Auto TT Calibrator, it is not advised to mix dongles. Doing so could result in some controls or feedback being unavailable. The software will warn of this when loading a setup file with features not enabled on the dongle.

If the system is identical, you can likely still use the software but we recommend to only do this as a temporary measure. The dongle should be returned to its original system as soon as possible and a replacement ordered for the system with an issue.

What compensation fluid should I use in my Jupiter Subsea Control System and what compensator type/size should be used?

Zetechtics recommend the use of Shell Diala B/BP / Engergol JS-A (or equivalent) transformer oil.

An active compensator with a maximum 0.7bar bias pressure should be used. This must be independent of any tooling, such as a Torque Tool, or rotating junction boxes with slip rings due to the risk of conductive swarf making its way onto the sensitive electronics in the Control System.

This calculator can assist with compensator size selection

The manuals for my Subsea Control System have been misplaced - can I get replacements?

If you have lost your hard copy manuals then you will find digital copies in PDF format included on both the Jupiter Software installation USB data stick and any laptop/PC delivered with your system.

Replacement digital copies can be requested by providing the System Reference to Zetechtics >>> 24 Hour Technical Support.

For equipment without a System Reference, please send the Part Number and Serial Number.

How do I calibrate an Analogue Sensor?

For Torque Tool Control systems, the Torque feedback will be rescaled to match an analyser using the TT Calibrator option. For any other sensors, such as pressure, compensator or distance sensors, guidance can be found in the software manual, Basic Fault-Finding Guide and this video:
Calibrate a Jupiter Control System Analogue Input

The system GUI is not appearing - how can I restore it?

When the Jupiter software loads, it will try to restore the last used .JUS file. If this cannot be found because it has been moved or renamed, the user will be prompted to select a file to load. This often results in the project.JUS being loaded.
Go to Setup Pages > Recall Setup then navigate to an operational .JUS file to restore functionality.

The GUI is too small or too large for the PC screen - how do I rescale it?

The Jupiter Software does not automatically scale the graphics to the screen resolution. The quickest option if the graphics are too small for the screen is to quit the Jupiter Software and choose a lower screen resolution that matches the .JUS file.

For files with graphics that extend off the screen, the first thing to check is Windows Display Settings and ensure the Scale value is not set higher than 100%.

If the highest screen resolution is lower than that which the file was created for, each element of the graphics will need to be manually scaled down in Setup Pages > Main Setup > User Graphics. The backing image would also require resizing in a suitable image editing program.

Contact Zetechtics >>> 24 Hour Technical Support with the .JUS file, System Reference, Jupiter Software version and screen resolution before attempting any GUI scaling, as an appropriate file may already exist.

Can I do a CCW Torque Tool Calibration?

No. The TT Calibrator will always operate flow in the CW direction as there is only a single scale factor that can be applied to the sensor input.
Torque transducers generally give a linear output; therefore, good accuracy should still be achieved in both directions.

Before verifying CCW after a calibration, the tool should be pre-loaded to as close to the target torque as possible. The tool should then be undocked from the analyser bucket so that both the analyser and software feedback can be zeroed, before proceeding to test CCW accuracy in stages.

I have a Low IR alarm - what should I do?

Insulation Resistance (IR) is measured on the Jupiter 2 PCB between 0Vdc and Earth in kΩ. A user alarm is often configured to alert if this is less than 1000kΩ.
A common consequence of Low IR is interference on sensors, particularly the Strain Gauge type as used for Torque Feedback. It has also been known to prevent stable communication with a control system.

Common causes of a Low IR are as follows:

  1. Contamination of, or incorrect compensation oil.
It is regularly reported that hydraulic oils are used as compensation fluid. These typically have a higher than desired relative humidity % (RH%), especially when not filtered before first use. This leads to conductivity in the oil which can affect the sensitive electronics of the Jupiter 2 system.
RH% increases at lower temperatures, so this problem can sometimes be masked on deck and only present subsea.
Draining the system is the first step in identifying if the oil is the root cause.
  2. Breakdown or leakage in a bulkhead connector.
This can often be difficult to identify. The first step is to disconnect everything apart from the Power/Data cable to see if the IR value rises.
If the IR value does not increase, then the system would need to be drained and the lid removed.
With the lid removed, each connector on the PCB can then be removed, leaving only Power/Data connected.
If the IR value still does not rise, the Power/Data connectors can then be removed and resistance checks between each pin and Earth should be performed to try to identify a breakdown.
If none of the above steps work, then the breakdown is likely occurring on the PCB, possibly due to contamination.
If the IR rises on unplugging a connection from the PCB, use the wiring diagram and perform resistance measurements to identify the exact cause of the breakdown to Earth. Previous causes have been linked to valve coils and pressure sensors.
  3. External sensor or cable.
As above, disconnecting external equipment should cause a rise in IR if one of these is the root cause of the breakdown. Replace the sensor or cable as required.

Note: Always observe electrical safety practices and only unplug connections or take resistance measurements when the power is OFF.
The IR is a low priority diagnostic, so allow 10 seconds between power on or disconnection of a service before recording any change on value.

Torque feedback is erratic or not changing - how do I find the cause?

The most likely cause is a cable or torque transducer fault. The cable pinout is 1 to 1, so start by measuring the pin-to-pin continuity of the cable.
Also check for any breakdown between each of the pins. The only pins that should have a connection to each other are 3 and 4, with pin 4 not being connected in the Torque Tool (TT).

Once the cable has been proved serviceable, connect it to the TT only and confirm the following resistances on the torque transducer with no load on the tool:

Pins Typical Resistance Ω
1 to 2 350
1 to 3 263
1 to 5 263
2 to 3 263
2 to 5 263
3 to 5 350
All pins to connector body Open Circuit

Any unexpected open circuits or large variations in resistance points to an issue with the TT wiring or the torque transducer. Further investigation may require removing the TT nose to access the transducer wiring.
Contact Support for a copy of the Maintenance Manual if guidance is required.

If any changes have been made to the Control System, such as bulkhead connector change or a setup file not previously proven with this system, confirm the system wiring and file mapping before any disassembly of the TT.
If you require assistance, send the Sys Ref and .JUS Setup File to Zetechtics >>> 24 Hour Technical Support.
